One day i was playing Crysis 2 maxed out on my pc getting 30-40 fps. then all of a sudden my PC restarted mid game. I load up the game and now the framerate is below 20. i tried a bunch of things and nothing worked. so i reformatted my windows 7 like new. installed crysis 2 and same thing, frame rates below 20. i found out it was the CPU. so i opened it, and cleaned off the thermal paste and put a pea size amount in the middle, then sealed everything up and booted my pc. i started playing battlefield 3 and i played for about 5 minutes with good framerates like before, but then my computer restarted again. now the framerate is back to crap. changing the thermal paste didnt work, so do i need a new CPU entirely? i can be idling on the desktop and eventually my computer will restart.

You haven't mentioned what kind of CPU cooler you're using. If it's the stock cooler that came with the CPU maybe try the Coolermaster 212 Evo before getting a new CPU. Also make sure the case cooling is sufficient.

Definitely pick up a new cooler (Coolermaster 212 Evo is always a good buy at around $20US) and see if that fixes your problem. 5 years is pretty old, especially for a stock cooler. Perhaps the fan on the cooler is starting to fail, they don't last forever.

Trying the new cooler is a lot less expensive than a new CPU. If you do have to get a new CPU, I'd still get the 212 as it's an excellent option over the stock cooler.

Hmmm its worth a shot. The fan is still running, i cleaned out the dust from it as well. For the convenience of time, Say I got the new cooler and I still get the same problem, would you suggest its the cpu and to just get a new one?

Without actually being there to diagnose in person, yes.
