290 will give you the best bang for your buck, however AMD cards (especially Gigabyte) have been known to put out a lot more heat, so you might want to invest in a a good fan or just be conscious about where you seat the GPU and the placement of your computer.

My pick is the 290 but you may be overspending. These are quite high end GFX and you need a system to match.

Full system specs and what you will use it for including display resolution please so we can save money/hassle.

I agree that you should watch out for bottlenecking, but if you intend to buy a new system or upgrade parts later, you would be able to simply move such a GPU to that system later rather than buying an entirely new GPU when you have to upgrade.

The R9 290 is no doubt the best bang for the buck right now. If you have a good PSU and a good CPU then you should definitely get it. If not then either upgrade those parts too or buy a graphics card that matches your system better. You should never buy something like a toxic edition 280x over a 290 because the next step up is always better than a factory overclocked edition.

I planned on building a gaming computer. Using a Fx 8350 processor, 8gb (2x4) g.skill x series. hopefully maxing out all games now and to come.

Your gaming display resolution is the most important factor to consider when buying a graphics card or even an entire system in some cases. Yes a 290 is awesome but if you're playing at 720p or 1280x1024 it's overkill. A 290 should be used in conjunction with an expensive FHD/QHD monitor that has a refresh rate over 60hz to get the most out of it. It can do 4k but not well.

I've seen another thread where someone spent over $1600 on graphics to game at 1080p on a tv. I don't want you to make a similar mistake by overspending on a gaming resolution.

I planed on geting an ASUS VG248QE 24-inch LED-lit Monitor 144Hz refresh rate 1ms pixel response time & 3D capable. For this rig. Maybe you could recommend something as good and cheaper or more and better?

3D is a gimmick, and it's a long dead talking point. Don't waste money on that tech. As for recommendations, I have none. 4k is on the horizon but I wouldn't buy it just yet, therefore if I were looking for a monitor to bridge the gap I'd want the least expensive feature rich monitor I could get to last 2-4 years.
