I want to finally upgrade and replace my monitor to a gaming monitor:
I set my sights on:
Asus VG248QE
BenQ XL2720Z
BenQ XL2420Z

BenQ XL2420Z - came out the leading option for me after I made some research:
That's because the XL2720Z model - people warnned me about reduced picture density of 1080p@ 27".
The XL2420Z is a 144Hz, 1ms, high contrast, gaming monitor. It features Flicker Free direct current display, low blue light and Blur Reduction.

However, just as I thought I will buy it...
I read many threads online about people crying out that 4k is the future in the next few months/years...
Other users use 1440p and similar resolutions that are higher than 1080p.
On the other end you got the G-sync coming soon.
Plus you have 144hz.

There is little to now common ground, not unless you are willing to spend a fortune. I am a buyer from Israel, so my options are limited, and buying from Amazon (+shipping and tax) makes everything 100%-150% more expansive.

So basically:
BenQ XL2420Z or BenQ XL2420G (G-sync, coming soon)?
144hz or 4k?
4k or 1440p?
24" or 27"?
Gsync or not?
I feel like true next gen isn't straight forward, for the reasons I have mentioned above, rather it's a multi-branched tree.
This ASUS monitor: ROG SWIFT PG278Q is probably the best of all worlds:
1440p, 27", 144Hz, 1ms, G-sync included. The works..
But it will cost me close to 1500-1800$ with import fees (wild guess). And it does not ship to Israel.

My rig specs:
Core i5-3570K (running @ 4.2 Ghz - slight auto voltage OC).
Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard
Asus 670 GTX DC2T
16 GB of G.Skill ripjaw-X DDR3 1600Mhz
SSD 256GB Crucial M4.
HD Western Digital Black 2TB
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Case: Corsair CC600T Graphite White Special Edition
Running Win 8.1 64bit. Pro

Also I forgot to ask, if I have a 1080p TV connected to the GPU via HDMI, and the other monitor is 144hz or 1440p/4k? Will that make an issue when using Extend/Duplicate/2nd monitor display modes?

Depends on what you value.
larger 27" 1440P and 30" 1600P ips panels give you more space and a better image. Good for strategy type games. For fast action shooters, you might prefer 1080P and tn panels which are faster.

Regardless, a GTX670 is not the fastest of cards and has no chance to run a 4k monitor at decent frame rates.

Adding a second side monitor will not affect your gaming on the primary monitor.
The only issue will be changing window sizes as you drag an image from one monitor to another.

A 4k monitor with g.sync may well work ok, but in the 28" range, the text will be very small. I am waiting for one on the 40" to 50" range.

I use 2 different size monitors and a TV as well, so you shouldn't have an issue there.

If you're already in 1080p, I would hold off...
Achieving 144fps on a 144hz monitor will be HARD even in 1080p with your 670.

1440p is the sweet spot for my $450 R9 290, and

4k is unfeasible on the 670 right now, you'll game at 25fps on low with it...

HAte to be a negative nancy, but if you have a 60hz 1080p, hold onto that. I'd get a 290 for under $400 now or at least a 770/780 on sale if you roll Nvidia only. THEN do some upgrading.

So, as far as monitors... do you like FPS or graphics?
I personally might get a 1440p soon for graphics, and then add 2 1080ps on the side to play 1080p Eyefinity (you can only mix resolutions like this on AMD cards so not too hekpful for you but)

If you want it NOW, get the BENQ and run games on low at like 120-144fps.
If you can wait, get a Gsync monitor if that's in your budget
If you like graphics save up for a new GPU, get a korean 1440p
4k is kind of unreachable... only an enthusiast thing... I'd have to get a second 290 to run games on high settings in 4k
Most people with 4k run with high end SLI/CF. you'd need 770 in SLI at the minimum for 4k, but a single 780/290 can handle 1440p well.

Honestly there is no straight answer, a lot of these options all go along with what you like and whether you are willing to upgrade your GPU.

First, I think my specs are good enough to achieve high frame rates (with Vsync turned off) - to utilize the 144Hz features.
I have also read that even if you are running at 60fps with a 144Hz monitor - it will still look a lot smoother. Same goes for 70, 80 100 fps etc.
Today's gaming are not so demanding tbh, therefore I can enjoy a faster smoother experience.
Also I have quite sensitive eyes, so low ms, flicker free and faster refresh-rate can be a big deal.

Regardless, I do plan on upgrade eventually. My goal is to buy the next Nvidia big card, featuring the new architecture. Something in the range of GTX 880ti (theoretically). I was not upgrading my 670 for a good reason, I am trying to squeeze the very most of this great card. And there is no real need for 780 or 780ti or a Titan nowdays.
But I figured if I skip upgrading to stronger 600 series or 700 series cards, and be patient enough, then jumping into Maxwell will be a great leap forward. It will have far greater impact than buying a 770 or 780 etc now. And since I am in Israel, and everything costs 100% if not 150% more, I need to make fewer - yet BIGGER UPGRADES.

To me both the specs of Asus VG248QE and BenQ XL2420Z (or XL2720Z) are really attractive:
144Hz, 1ms, high contrast and brightness, eye fatiguing prevention (BenQ - and it is confirmed) etc.
I think it will look great on 3rd person action games as well as shooters and others.

In terms of colors, I use Nvidia Digital Vibrance in display settings, for all my monitors: going 150% or 166% (same for ATI Saturation) and it makes the colors look that much better and more vivid.

I also thought that 4K is a bit of a stretch, a ridiculous goal to reach at the moment. Even you spend thousands more $ just to have the hardware for it, you will still constantly struggle for a smooth playable framerate. And that will make your gpu look weak.

QHD - is probably the sweetspot, for me the DREAM MONITOR is this:
ROG SWIFT PG278Q
http://www.asus.com/us/Monitors_Projectors/ROG_SWIFT_PG278Q/

Not much to say, the best monitor for gaming if you ask me: 144Hz, 1ms, Nvidia G-sync, 27", 1440p greatness !! and more.
Alas... Amazon don't have it avaiable yet for shipping, and it will probably cost a fortune. Might be worth it though.

Can you give example of good fast 1440p monitors btw?
Although I am really leaning toward higher Mhz than 60, so the ROG SWIFT PG278Q would have been perfect.
Just checked Tiger Direct: That monitor costs 800$ retail + 310 $ shipping, so it is 1110 $ not including TAX probably, which is an extra 35% or something. And then you have rate fees. Damn I hate living outside the US, its terrible to be a gamer here.

Hmm... I know that faster 1440p's are appearing now, and I think once Gsync and AMD's Freesync monitors are out you will see a TON of 120hz and 144hz monitors.

Might just have to wait the tech out. There are a few out there but... I'd personally update my GPU first whilst I wait for Gsync to release fully. (theres a few out, dunno if they ar more than 60hz tho)
