I think I burned out my HDDs

Putting together a new build and the first time I turned it on I couldent find my HDD. In the troubleshooting I tried my laptops HDD to check the cable and had the same issue. When I plugged my laptop HDD back into the laptop I had the same issue on the laptop now. I later realized that my SATA power connector was plugged into the GPU/CPU power on the PSU (Since its fully modular). My SSD that was plugged into the same cable is still working fine, which is strange, but both the HHDs now show no sign of life at all. They arent recognized in the BIOS, and dont even spin up. Is there any way to at least recover the data on these drives without spending a huge amount of money sending it to a data recovery shop?

make sure there no power to the drives or data cables..let them sit for an hour or two to drain. then plug power only into the drive see if it spins up. if you dont feel it spin up..if it a new drive with no data rma it back as dead. the laptop drive do the same thing if there no spin up..with that one with data on it you can try replacing the pcb board on top of the drive with the same one from another drive and see if it spins up.

I was actually swapping the case. The hard drives are both +1 year old so there wouldent be any sending them back. Completely my fault it seems I just mixed up the wires and gave it too much voltage. I already have new hard drives on the way but I would like to try and get any data I can off them.

Would the freezer trick work for drives that have been burned out in this way? I have heard a lot of good things and a lot of bad things about the freezer trick so im hesitant to go through with it.

Turns out the better hard drive is actually still under manufacturer warranty. I am going to return it for a replacement but I want to try and get crap off it beforehand. Do you think I would have any luck with that freezer trick? Or will they deny my warranty if they find out I tried it?

The one I want to get data off of is a MQ01ABD100 Toshiba 1GB Drive.

I was looking into a PCB replacement, but it looks like that will cost the price of the drive just to get the data off, if it works. And then im sure toshiba wouldent accept the RMA after I put a new board on there. I would kill for a quick fix that would give me 5 minutes to pull crap off my drive.

I suspect that the PSU killed your drives. Those "modular" cables are not made to a standard, so if you mix cables from two different PSUs, then there is a possibility of applying 12V to the drive's 5V input, or other problems.

I would measure the drives' TVS diodes. If any are shorted, then this will confirm that you have a PSU problem, in which case you should avoid plugging in more drives.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

Your Toshiba HDD probably has a fuse and protection diode. I would check those with a multimeter.
