Windows 7 Ultimate disabling internet connection after updates

I just installed a new Maximus VII Formula motherboard that was working perfectly until I started using windows update. After certain updates the computer would boot and the network connection would show an exclamation mark and no access. Sometimes the Xonar soundcard would have static too. I've tried all day to troubleshoot the issue. I can't find a consistency between individual updates. A single Office update resulted in the same problem as a security update, which makes me think something else is happening. When I restore everything is fine, but I'm finding that I have to go through each update individually to see if it will cause the issue.

I have the latest drivers for the LAN port, but the problem persists. Calling Asus and Microsoft was a waste of time, they both told me to call the other. Can anyone offer any real solutions?

Here is an update with more details. I opened the command prompt and found that the computer can talk to the router. I flushed the DNS too, but the problem remains. It's definitely something to do with something that occurs as a result of windows update. I've read other possible fixes on here and have tried them, but none have worked. I turned the router on and off, all the simple things. I can't figure out what the problem is.

I think I'm close to a solution but I still want to put this out there for anyone else that encounters the issue. I've discovered under the ipconfig in the command prompt that the default gateway is displaying 0.0.0.0 above the normal address. This feels like the problem, but I still don't know how to fix it. Even if nobody responds I'll post again if I figure it out.
