Core i5-4690K (overclocked) vs E3-1230v3 for gaming? I want to upgrade from my i3 and I originally planned on the i5, although people have suggested the Xeon would give me better performance. Opinions?

I primarily use my PC for gaming, although since I use a lot of mods, unzipping .rar files the size of the sun takes up much of my day. So which of the two would be better for my gaming rig (with a Z97-G45 and GTX 760)?

Solution
Depending on your oc, the I5 makes up for missing hyperthreading, for games it's stronger anyway.

Pros of the xeon: Doesn't need an aftermarket cooler, consumes less power, equally strong (or partially stronger) in tasks that use 8 threads. Doesn't require a z97 board, h97 is fine.

Pro's of I5 4690k: Stronger in games, a bit cheaper, integrated graphics (in emergency case) and oc'ing can be fun.

However, both can support the 760 gtx without problems. Even two 780 ti's shouldn't be bottlenecked.
Therefore my recommendation: go with the I5, if you have an aftermarket cooler and a z97 board.
Go with the xeon if you miss one of above things.
