I'm going to be building a gaming PC soon for about $1200 and I'm wondering if I should upgrade to windows 8.1 or just stick with trusty dusty windows 7! I already have a PC (that I'm using right now) that has 7 on it, and I really like it. I know where everything is, and how to use it. But I did read online that in some games like BattleField 4, windows 8 actually gives you a noticeable FPS gain. I don't mind learning a new OS, but if its too glitchy and non-user friendly, I'll just say screw it and get windows 7. I also heard that in 2015 they'll stop updating windows 7..... sooo what about that?

If you have never tried window 8, try it out. I find reviews online to be very biased and often times compare windows 8 to windows vista, which is just SILLY.

To give you a short review, windows 8 is a better optimized windows 7. Plus some GUI changes, such as removal of the start menu, and addition of metro UI, which once you get used to, it is better then the start menu.

That being said, Personally, I don't think you should spend the extra money to get window 8, as you can use it to get better hardware, if you already own a copy of windows 7 that you can legally use.

You can always buy and update OS, but it would be a waste of money, for example, to upgrade your gtx770 to a gtx780.

Mainstream support supposedly ends in 2015. Long term support not until 2020.

Win 8 gives the benefit of further DirectX versions. And some games reportedly run faster on WIn 8.

If you like 7, just go with that. But given a couple of minor tweaks, Win 8.1 is no less user friendly than 7.
