I have mounted the h100i on my 4790k and have a question.. after feeling both tubes only one feels like its doing something the other one i cant feel or hear any feeling or noise. Is this normal?

Solution

Haha I have the same tendency to monitor temperatures like crazy after a cooler installation. If it's any consolation:

1. Your CPU will run hotter right after you apply new thermal paste. This is just a matter of burn in, as the paste "settles." After the burn in, you'll have better temperatures. (When I installed my 4790K, I also had around 30-35C idle with a similarly performing cooler right after installation. After about...

On a simple level, think about what's happening with the cooler.

1. The pump runs cold water to the hot CPU block.
2. The water heats up as it passes by the CPU block.
3. The water leaves the CPU block and travels towards the radiator.
4. The water cools in the radiator.
5. The cool water goes back to the CPU block.

It makes sense that one tube would be warm, while the other would be cool(er).

Are you worried the cooler isn't functioning properly? What temperatures are you getting?

(You can check by downloading and installing HWMonitor. It also helps to run a stress test to meaningfully test a cooler's performance. Something like Prime95 would be more than sufficient. )

around 33c but that's at idle.. i haven't tested it under load yet. neither tubes are warm per say its more that one u can feel the water going through and the other u cant feel anything. makes me think one of the tubes is malfunctioning

Ah, I see. Well the H100i's pump is above the cooling block, and will be pushing water through one tube and pulling from another. I'd imagine one tube would feel different than the other. If I had worked with the H100i before I could answer your question better, but judging by the fact that you have decent temperatures, I think it's a safe bet that you have a fully functioning H100i.

For water not to move through one tube, it would have to be blocked. If it was blocked, you would have a very apparent heat issue very quickly. No moving water = no moving heat.

Sorry for not being able to answer your question very well!

you answered very well thank you :) one last question. I've started downloading some games of mine through steam and am watching a youtube video at the same time.. just noticed my temps are now in the 40's. Is that normal sense its not really under a load? almost scarred to play something like watchdogs. :/

1. Your CPU will run hotter right after you apply new thermal paste. This is just a matter of burn in, as the paste "settles." After the burn in, you'll have better temperatures. (When I installed my 4790K, I also had around 30-35C idle with a similarly performing cooler right after installation. After about a day, idle temps dropped to 27-30C. For reference, I had ~25C ambient temps.)

2. I also get around 35-40C when I'm watching videos and running some background apps. I wouldn't worry so much about that! :)

3. It's very hard to overheat and damage your CPU if you aren't overclocking. So even if something is wrong, there isn't much risk as the CPU will throttle or your computer will shutdown before damage is done.

Here's what I do. Before running anything intensive, I like to help along the burn in period with some stress tests. Heat up/cool down cycles accelerate the process. They also will reveal if you have any heat issues. If your CPU can survive Prime95, it'll survive any game! For reference, stop the test if your temps exceed 80C. For a stock 4790K, you shouldn't see temps that high with an H100i.

You are fine up to 80c. You probably won't pass 65c with the h100i, but even if you do, under 80c you're good for everyday use. You might want to check your voltage, motherboards tend to give the 4790k far more voltage than it needs.

(Mine would draw 1.35v on auto setting at stock speeds, now im with 1.27v on 4.7ghz on all cores.
