Me and my girlfriend both have win8 machines and was wondering what the best antivirus we could get it. I heard a lot of good things about bit defender and Norton. I have a custom built machine and she has an HP laptop. I try and watch where I go and what I download (Mostly steam games and school stuff). Her on the other hand is different and I stream/move alot of movies and music from her laptop to my desktop.

You don't actually need an antivirus if you know what to avoid (.exe files received on email from someone you don't know, warez or porn websites, torrents, strong dc, etc). A firewall should be enough.
Antivirus software that I used in the past:
- Panda antivirus: missed some trojans
- Bitdefenter: good, but uses a lot of resources
- Kaspersky: good, uses a lot of resources (less than bitdefender) and gives false positives
- Norton: as everyone else said, avoid it
After all these I stopped at Avast which suits my needs very well. It's light, user friendly and doesn't use too many resurces. Even the free version is fine, but they'll try to convince you to buy it once in a while.

I'm a fan of Avast. The free version is fine and the benefit of Avast is it allows you to do a boot scan which isn't available in most free platforms. I've been running the free version of Avast for a couple years, and haven't been disappointed. Just be sure to pair it with something like CCleaner and Malwarebytes. Run each once a month and you'll be clear sailing.

It all depends... you know!
No antivirus is complete in itself but one thing is common in all of them that they work fine only if they are updated often... atleast once in a day. It depends upon your network plan.
I have used Kaspersky essential- but it delayed from shutdown of the pc very often
Avast free edition is also good but not complete protection
Now I'm using Bitdefender Total Security very happily. it not only protects your pc but also keeps you secure online especially for banking transactions. It updates itself several times a day but i have unlimited net plan... so no worry.
But again its not complete in itself so i use malwarebytes for security from malware.
Moreover Every antivirus will use your system resources while complete scan so you will not be able to use your pc in that period most of the time as it becomes very slow during that period (at least in my case).
