Guys,

Sorry to pop all your bubbles, but just for starters, OneKub hasn't even mentioned his ambient temperature, which is a critical piece of information ... don't ya think? I find these threads amazing ... how everyone quickly jumps to conclusions without the most basic information.

We all remember science class where one of the guiding principles for conducting a controlled experiment, is that it's critical to follow the same procedure every time. This eliminates variables so results will be consistent and repeatable.

If everyone tests their rigs using X stress software at Y Ambient temperatures with Z measuring utilities resulting in CPU or Package or Core temperatures, then it's impossible to compare apples to apples. This is what makes processor temperatures are so confusing!

OneKub,

Running games to test your processor temperatures doesn't prove anything. You need to run proper thermal tests. There's a specific way to test your processor temperatures so that you can get valid thermal benchmarks which are as close as possible to Intel's methods.

The procedures are described in this Tom's Sticky: Intel Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

There's a Guide in the CPU's Forum ... and another one in the Overclocking Forum ... ya can't miss either of them!

Please give it a read.

Just in case no one has bothered to read the Forum Rules, we DO ask that you please read the Stickies before you start a thread or post on someone else's thread.

Chances are that someone already took the time and went to all the trouble to conduct some very intensive and in-depth research to provide a Guide or a Tutorial just for your benefit ... which most likely answers all your questions ... so you don't even have to ask ... and impose on someone else's time to write answers which have already been written in great detail!

The bottom line? ... we want Tom's readers to have the most accurate information available, so LOOK for the Stickies at the top of the Forums! Please, please, please ... READ first before you post! You can save us all a lot of time by eliminating wrong conceptions, becoming better informed, and help us to stop the proliferation of misinformation!

Thank you,

Agreed. You'll note in the my response I mentioned ambient temps, so....
I see you're a mod and all, and that's super, but don't go patronising everyone. No one jumped to conclusions. Agreed you can go to extremes to work out temps, but I don't think that's what old mate is chasing. I'm guessing he's got himself a shiny new CPU, and is just curious as to whether the temps he is seeing are OK. Everyone seems to think so. Why is that so bad? Agree, we want accurate info on the site. But I don't think there's anything particularly inaccurate here? I would also think a friendly and welcoming site would be good too.

Fireman Dave,

You're right, of course. As I read that again it's quite inappropriately worded. I'm typically more cordial and level headed. Everyone has a bad day, but there's no excuse for failing to exercise proper restraint. Sorry I went off. My apologies to anyone who felt offended.

I see so many of these temperature threads. Most don't post their specs and ambient. We give advice that's ignored. We write lengthy explanations no one reads. We post links no one clicks. At times it can be disappointing, frustrating, and even overwhelming.

It comes with the turf. Sorry this one tripped my breaker.

Indeed. For example, I'm usually not so forceful...

To be honest this is actually one of the friendliest forums I've been on (particularly considering it's size) :D
