How to get sound to play through HDMI to monitor

Hi there. I have a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi sound card (Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Express x1 Interface Sound Card). The problem that I am having is that when I wear my headphones, all sounds great. But when I try to switch the output to try to get it to play through my speakers (in the monitor), it won't. I've turned off my onboard sound as I thought the card would handle all the sound. Is this possibly the problem? I've also tried hooking up a 3.5mm jack to the back of the sound card and running it to the monitor and that was also a no-go. Any help or advice is appreciated.

In order to get audio through your HDMI output, you need to use your video card's built-in audio hardware since that's where the HDMI cable is plugged in. If you have a Nvidia card, you may have noticed the "HD Audio" driver that comes with the Nvidia graphics driver. You'll need that to be installed, or whatever the AMD equivalent is.

If you've got the proper audio driver installed, you can set your default audio device from the sound card to the video card (it will have a strange name in your Windows settings, probably the name of your monitor) and it should work immediately.

You need to adjust your settings in the software for the sound card. There may be a conflict in Windows where it's got the headset as the primary device to output sound and when you unplug it there's no secondary output device listed. Check your playback tab in the "sound" section in the control panel. You can also get there by right clicking on the speaker icon in your task bar if you've got it showing.

I'm at work right now but had a similar issue with my Razer Kraken headset and my desktop speakers not wanting to play right. When I can, I'll grab a screen shot of my settings to show you what I mean and how to set it up so that it should work.
