Hello all,
Just over a week ago, I purchased an ASUS M51AD from a reputable retailer in Turkey. Specs:
i7 4770
8 GB RAM
2 GB HD8570
My intention was to swap out the (very weak) GPU with one I had purchased for my old computer (650ti). I did this successfully. However, I found the PSU to be weak (just 350 W). That said, the computer ran flawlessly for just under a week, and I monitored performance in game (rome 2 extreme settings) and via Speccy for voltage fluctuations and temp. All was fine.
One day, I came home and pressed the on switch.... and nothing. No lights, no spinning fans, no beeps. Total silence. In my state of panic, after checking internal cables and everything else I could think of, I did something very stupid; moved the voltage slider on the back of the PSU. Bang. With the PSU then destroyed, I decided to get a new, 750 W, PSU and install that myself, instead of just taking the machine to service.
I successfully installed the new PSU and the computer booted flawlessly. I tried a few shutdowns and every time it rebooted without concern. On the first boot after installing the new PSU, it did go into a BIOS screen, though. Thinking I had saved the rig, I turned it off and went out. When I came back, I was again greeted by a completely lifeless computer. No sounds, no fan spinning, nothing. Note that the green light on the mobo was always on, except when I blew the first PSU...
I pressed the on switch hopefully for the rest of that day, then gave up, resolving to call in an expert the next day. I got up the next morning, pressed the switch and on it came. No problems. The machine then ran flawlessly the whole day, and turned on again this morning no problem.
My question is what could be causing this? Will it happen again? It's difficult to fully enjoy my new rig not knowing if it'll turn on or not. After it booted again, I did try removing it from the outlet and holding down the on switch, which resulted in the front LED lighting up for a brief second and what sounded like an ejection of built-up electricity. That happened the next time I tried it, too.
Any help is much appreciated, and I will certainly be calling in help if it happens again as I don't have the technical skills to test everything myself.
Thank you.
