Inconsistent problems powering up computer

Hello all,

Just over a week ago, I purchased an ASUS M51AD from a reputable retailer in Turkey. Specs:

i7 4770
8 GB RAM
2 GB HD8570

My intention was to swap out the (very weak) GPU with one I had purchased for my old computer (650ti). I did this successfully. However, I found the PSU to be weak (just 350 W). That said, the computer ran flawlessly for just under a week, and I monitored performance in game (rome 2 extreme settings) and via Speccy for voltage fluctuations and temp. All was fine.

One day, I came home and pressed the on switch.... and nothing. No lights, no spinning fans, no beeps. Total silence. In my state of panic, after checking internal cables and everything else I could think of, I did something very stupid; moved the voltage slider on the back of the PSU. Bang. With the PSU then destroyed, I decided to get a new, 750 W, PSU and install that myself, instead of just taking the machine to service.

I successfully installed the new PSU and the computer booted flawlessly. I tried a few shutdowns and every time it rebooted without concern. On the first boot after installing the new PSU, it did go into a BIOS screen, though. Thinking I had saved the rig, I turned it off and went out. When I came back, I was again greeted by a completely lifeless computer. No sounds, no fan spinning, nothing. Note that the green light on the mobo was always on, except when I blew the first PSU...

I pressed the on switch hopefully for the rest of that day, then gave up, resolving to call in an expert the next day. I got up the next morning, pressed the switch and on it came. No problems. The machine then ran flawlessly the whole day, and turned on again this morning no problem.

My question is what could be causing this? Will it happen again? It's difficult to fully enjoy my new rig not knowing if it'll turn on or not. After it booted again, I did try removing it from the outlet and holding down the on switch, which resulted in the front LED lighting up for a brief second and what sounded like an ejection of built-up electricity. That happened the next time I tried it, too.

Any help is much appreciated, and I will certainly be calling in help if it happens again as I don't have the technical skills to test everything myself.

Thank you.

Perhaps. I did check where it connects to the mobo, but I can't access the switch on the front of the case...

Does the computer operating normally when it is on suggest the mobo etc. are fine? I'm pretty sure my new Thermaltake 750W PSU is just fine. After repalcing the 350W PSU that came with the machine I've also noticed it runs quieter. Very frustrating...

The fact that one time it'll work completely fine, then the next it won't switch on at all seems to suggest the switch or PSU. Similar to a car; if you turn the key and absolutely nothing happens, it's either your ignition or the battery. As you've just replaced the PSU, I'd be thinking it's more likely the power switch.
What PSU do you have now as a matter of interest? I have a TT 750W Smart Power and love it ^_^

So just got home and have the same issue... not powering on at all. This is just too bizarre. Does this really suggest an issue with the switch on the case? It can work fine for a whole day and then not at all the next. I have been able to identify no pattern at all...

I really appreciete the help so far.

I actually spoke to soon unfortunately! Having had the outlet checked for correct grounding and voltage, and purchasing a solid surge protector, I was ensured by the service people I wouldn't experience the same problem after they re-installed BIOS. It worked for a day and won't turn on again this morning. I'm now losing my mind...

Does this point to a faulty motherboard? I'm sure it'll power on again tonight or tomorrow, but I never know if it'll turn on just a few hours later or the next day. This is truly bizarre and I have been able to find noone with an identical problem anywhere...
