I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to PC building but I've managed to build a system that was working just fine until I installed a R9 290 at the weekend. Here is my full set-up:

GPU - Sapphire Tri-X R9 290
CPU- AMD FX-8350
Mobo - ASRock 980DE3/U3S3
Memory - 16Gb Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz
PSU - Be Quiet! CM BQT L8-730W PSU
Case - Zalman Z9 Plus Tower
Card Reader & USB3 hub - AKASA AK-HC-05BK v2
SSD - Crucial M500 240Gb SSD
HDD - Toshiba 5400rpm 2.5" HDD
CD - Samsung CDRW/DVDROM
OS - Windows 8.1 (Fully updated)

Everything was working fine with a Sapphire R9 270x but I fancied future proofing by getting a R9 290 Tri-X. The problem is that I get random reboots from Windows desktop. I played Metro Last Light for a couple of hours and had no issues, the reboots only seem to occur when I'm on the desktop, browsing, using file explorer etc.

I tried uninstalling CCC, then wiping drivers using DDU from safe mode. When i tried to reinstall the drivers (CCC 14.4) they kept failing. I ended up using "refresh my PC" and tried again. After this I was able to install CCC 14.4 and all seemed to be well. That was until I tried to reinstall MS Office. It rebooted right in the middle of installation and that seemed to corrupt Windows as it was going in a "Attempting to Repair" loop. I then decided to do a complete wipe of the SSD (where Windows is installed) and start again, getting rid of any conflicts etc.

So, I now have a fresh install of Windows 81,.I have reinstalled CCC 14.4. I installed MSI Afterburner and found that my fan GPU fan was running at very low speeds, so I bumped it up to make sure everything stayed cool. With the CPU at 27 degrees and GPU at 35 degrees. The rebooting is still as bad as ever.

Could my card be faulty? Is the PSU big enough? Could it be the mobo? I can't understand why it crashes on desktop but not in games when there is more load.

Please help??

Sorry, forgot to say that I also updated to the latest BIOS for my mobo (1.60) which has had no effect. Also, the GFX card is connected directly from the PSU using a 6 pin and 8 pin connector.

Ok, so call me impatient but I called OCUK today for tech support with the card. The guy on the phone told me that the problem is common on these cards and that it is most likely a faulty VRM affecting the memory that is causing the reboots. The card is being RMAed for a replacement. Fingers crossed for second time lucky!
