Looking for some help here.
Building my son his first PC for gaming
Current parts:
Case : Defender Black ATX PC Gaming Case With 600W PSU
CPU i5 - 3570t . 2.30 ghz. 6mb 4 cores
Memory : Kingston DDR3 4 Gig
Motherboard :msi H61M-P31 (G3)
GPU : HELP?
Budget for GPU £130..
Games BF3-4.. GTA...Cyrus...
I have been reading up and the 7870 looks good, but just read that there are issues with the cooling, that it is not very effective, is there an alternative that will give as good performance.
Thank you.
M

Why not grab a Sapphire R9 270X Toxic, Tri-X, or Vapor-X? In terms of performance I listed them descendingly, they all have great cooling and you will face no issues at all. They are all also better than the HD 7870 as they are from the latest AMD GPU generation and will also have better driver support. Theu should be around your price range.

Actually, the HD7870 is getting rare here in the UK, and I'm not a fan (pun intended) of the XFX DD cooler of that period, it kept my HD7950 cool enough but was, for me, too noisy.
Sticking rigidly to budget the best would be a R9 270, which is a decent enough card and you might find a 'special' of the R9 270X, again within budget with some searching.
A few places to look: Aria, Overclockers, Novatech, CCL, Dabs, Scan, Ebuyer, Pixmania, Maolins and the omnipotent Amazon.
ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION: Or you could try to find about an extra £30 and move up to the R9 280, with 3Gb of memory and better all round performance it's a massively powerful card for the money, just be aware it also needs a strong powersupply with at least one 6 pin and on 8 pin (they're usually of the 6+2 design) PCI-E leads to keep it fed.

VTX are a 'value' brand, and I've seen them get some bad write-ups, mainly aimed at the coolers so it's probably not for you.
The R9 280 is a little lower in performance than a R9 280X (that 'X' is important, it denotes the next step up).
I'd discount the R9 280X unless you can find one on special offer (like the MSI you found earlier) just because the CPU won't really allow it to run at full capacity- but if you can get a Ferrari for Ford money why turn it down?
Probably your best match, for both price and performance would be the R9 270X, it's only a little slower than the R9 280 and closer to budget, if you don't have to sell body parts or send the kid/s to school barefoot to afford it I'd go for the faster R9 280, though, better all round performance and that 3Gb of memory makes it a far better long term proposition.

Let me know what brands you find in all three(280X, 280, 270X) and I'll pick the best one for you. Just to be clear: The three cards are future proof, they WILL last AT LEAST a couple of years. Maybe they won't max out every game for the next couple of years but they will run then on quite decent/high settings, so rest assured.

It all depends on what's available for you. Differs from one place to the other. Your best shot is the R9 280 as it's the best perfomance wise out of the 3 and performance > everything.
Note for future selection: The 4 GB VRAM on the Sapphire card is unusable unless you're using a very high resolution screen(1440p, 4k) and I doubt the card can handle those kinda resolutions properly either ways, so be sure not to buy any card with more VRAM than needed, it's only a waste of money.
Have a good one. Your son's definitely gonna love his new rig.

Usually the PSU units that come with cases work but aren't reliable and may fail. Refer to this in order to know what to look for. Mainly look for Seasonic or XFX units, but also look into other brands for a better price as long as they're the same tier.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I'm not going to answer now, I'm sulking.
Oh, alright, I can't stay in a strop all day.
Case units aren't usually very good, but take a peek at it before swapping it out, the system you're building isn't going to be heavily overclocked and the cards under discussion are not super heavy power consumers, so it MAY be OK, check the list linked by Yous if it's not there, drop us a line.
Probably one of the best non modular: http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplie... they're new to the UK, but highly regarded.
One of the cheaper modular available: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA...
If the case is a bit small or you can't route cables out of the way, I'd go for the Corsair, plenty here don't like them but it'll be going strong long after you, or your son, have moved on to something else.

Cheap but functional case, nice to see a few useful touches in such an inexpensive enclosure: the cutout behind the CPU socket and cable management openings should be helpful.
That case is available at CCL for about £25- no PSU not sure about the fan LED colours so you might opt to go there and just get the case rather than get a case and unwanted PSU off Ebay.
Whichever option you go for you'll need at least one extra fan, that case only comes with one front fan, you MUST add a second fan in the rear to ensure at least reasonable ventilation. The E-bay case also lacks a mains power lead!
