If new os you installed is windows you can enable displaying of hidden folders and files through control panel -> folder optinons -> view tab -> show hidden files and folders.
However intalling new os may or may not have formatted you drive. If you had your files on desktop you should look for them in C:/Users.OLD/username/Desktop or Users/username.OLD/Desktop, you may need to enable "show hidden files" and disable "hide protected system files" first.
