Yesterday afternoon we were downloading and installing a program that I suspected might contain some unwanted software. As the download completed and the install started, I decided that I should stop the install, so I turned the computer off. I could not shutdown the computer through windows or the power button, so I flipped the switch. When I went to turn the PC back on I got the message that my PC ran into a problem that it couldn't handle, and now needs to restart, upon restart it went to the MOB splash screen, then to the windows load screen, then proceeded to a black screen. After a few more attempts I finally got the windows 8.1 choose and option screen. I have tried all these options and I can not do anything. I tried:

  • Auto Repair
    Do a system restore
    Image recovery
I also tried to boot in safe mode, but still only got the black screen
    all other options given

I have come to the realization that I will probably have lost everything on the computer, which is no big deal at this time. I just want to re install windows 8.1 and re-download all my programs. However, I do not have my install media, nor do I have the product code (we just moved). Is there anything else I can do to recover my system so I do not have to purchase another copy of windows? The copy that I have is 8.1 OEM.

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: after looking for answers online, I have come to the conclusion that this was an attempt to put ransomware on my computer. I think that I turned off my computer quickly enough to not allow it to fully install, and that is why I am not receiving the ransom img. I found this video that I will try when I get home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v34AAIO2tzs.

If anyone has anyother thoughts or tips, please let me know! Thanks again.

So I am home now, and I tried the video above, but when I go to open the run folder (like he did at 4:25) I get only the '(default) REG_SZ (value not set) option. I think I stopped the install midway through and it didn't have a chance to install this piece... How do I get my computer to boot without anything in the run folder?!
