Twice over the last few days my son has been telling me that his PC has been getting messages that his cpu temp is high and one one occasion he said his system shut down.
At idle the temp is 48c and the highest iv'e seen it is 68c.
Using just the stock heatsink / fan.
He is quite the gamer also, plus is room get pretty hot during the day, even when the AC kicks in.
His set up:

AMD FX 8320,
Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+
GeIL EVO Veloce Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB
Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower
Corsair 500W ATX12V

I know AMD does run hot,,but i need to do somthing.
Contemplating on the Coolermaster 212 Evo, i have this in my system and i love it, or thinking of maybe going for somthing like the Corsair hydro H55.
Need to check later if the evo will fit.
Any other recommendations?

I love the 212. It really is the minimum I would suggest for an 8350 even if not overclocking because that chip gets so dang hot.
if you go with a liquid cooler then I suggest the Corsair H100i. the H55 wont do you much better thent he Hyper 212.

Depending on his case, that could make a difference too. If you can, you might want to think about moving his rig to a case with a large vented top like the Corsair 300R. all of my current rigs use this case, I just put (2) 120mm or 1400mm fans on the top vents and the cases stay quite crisp.

He's only 15 and saved all the money up for his system himself ( build it in December 2013), i only had to order and put it together for him. I'm real happy with my evo,, my idle temps are 28c at the moment, think the highest i've seen is 48c,, and i do a bit of gaming myself.
Might just go with another evo for him.. thanks for the input guys really appreciate it.
( mind you getting the H100I sounds pretty tempting :) )

The H100i is ok but I have always been more partial to air coolers. Closed loop coolers always make me nervous because they require no maintenance. if you have an custom loop system you need to drain and refill it at least once a year. Yet no one can really explain why you don't need to do with with closed loops. This makes me wonder if after several years they just stop working.

I trust air cooling a lot more because once you put it on its pretty much there to stay. eventually the fan goes, so you just stick a new one on. good thermal paste will last you 7-10 years, which is more then the lifespan of most systems.

By comparison, if the pump on that H100i goes out then you need to replace the whole unit.

Meanwhile high end air coolers perform just as good as H100i but run a lot less noisy and are cheaper.
However, either way would be overkill, the 212 evo will be good enough. Seing as your sons idle temps are high, I would check the airflow in his case first, though. Because if the air doesn't escape and new gets in, it just heats up. No cooler would be able to handle that.

The 212 should be fine.

As for the all in ones. So far I have had ok luck with them. I do have an H80i that is VERY quiet(pump wise). I also have an LQ310(Asetek based unit that is installed on my video card). The pump is not nearly as quiet. They both do the job however.

Truth be told, the H80i is not a top performer compared to the big air coolers, but for my smaller case, it was a good idea.

Idk why all the talk about FX's being so darn hot, they have a max official temp 72c. which in retrospect is fairly low when compared to haswells 100c (an approachable number for a decently OC chip) My advice is to tweak the voltage down and slap a $30 evo on it and I will be blown away if that 8350 crosses 50c-55c under any load besides stress/bench even when over clocked a bit.

I like your thinking,, not sure my son will be too impressed,, think ill order the evo, hopefully it will fit.
His case is 7 1/2 " wide..

Just came across a youtube vid and the guy on there says it will fit ..with 2-3mm to spare lol

Take a tape or stick measure that has centimeters on it. measure from the board to where the side panel would be, you need at least 16cm clearance or it wont fit. The actual measurement is 15.8cm from the cpu socket but I didnt think you wanted to yank the cooler off and measure from the chip up to the side panel.

The Hyper 212 EVO is below minimum for an 8320/8350. Not bad for a 4300 or 6300. My thoughts are never do half measures. Using the Hyper 212 EVO with an eight core FX cpu is a half measure. Some improvement over stock but not a whole lot. $20 more gets you a much better 140mm cooler.
