Hi.I'm planning on putting together a gaming unit based around the GTX760. But I'm wondering whether there is an AMD gpu that perfroms similar to this. I'm on a budget and wonder if an AMD gpu might be cheaper. I also heard that AMD graphic cards tend to heat up a lot or faster. I this true? One last thing, while going through the various GTX760s around, i found the Asus Striker GTX760P which has 4 GB of RAM instead of the normal 2 on other GTX760 variants. Can anyone kindly explain the difference between more RAM on a GPU and how it affects performance? Thanks a lot and sorry for the many questions.

AMD R9 280, or AMD Radeon HD 7950 are both faster than the GTX 760 and usually quite a bit cheaper.

RAM is important for a wide variety of reasons, typically 2GB is good for mid-range cards. The R9 280 normally has 3GB which makes it a little better for the future.

Hi thanks a lot! Now i have choices. By the way, any idea on the part of AMD's GPUs getting very hot compared to Nvidias?

I would say 270X is more around that area. 280's are closer to 770.

That is just fanboy rumors if someone said that. Granted, AMD's R9 290 and R9 290x get hotter and use more power than Nvidia's 780 Ti, but that isn't true across all levels, just in the ultra high end.

The GPU coolers are well matched to the graphics cards so typically all cards below R9 290 stay below 80C at full load, typically below 70C. For example my 7850 is overclocked heavily and uses a smaller cooler and it stays below 70C at all times.

The GTX760 runs as hot if not more hot than any R9 280/X or 270/X.

Ok. Thanks a lot guys! Been real helpful. So say i get a 280, any recommendations on what processor and motherboard to pair it with? If I'm on a budget can i save on the motherboard? Would that cause any bottlenecks? For the processor I'm loking at an i5 4440 or an AMD FX8320

AMD is usually more power for you dollar. With Nvidia you get better/more stable drivers in general (opinion) and better power efficiency. Cards running hot is usually a non-issue because you can get a different manufacturer with better cooling. You want the extra VRAM, believe me, I would say more than 3gb is ideal for VRAM right now. Anyways, apparently the new line of Nvidia cards are slated to come out very soon, you should just hold off at this point.

that's what Im looking at but can the card bottle neck its self you get all that memory but can the cards memory interface width or bandwidth keep up to it ??? so its ya you got all that memory on the card but can the card feed it ?

Alright nice. Think I'll go with the AMD paring of the 280 and FX8320. Think i can save on a motherboard and get a cheaper one? And any recommendations for this guys?

For a CPu and motherboard, you can save a little bit, best go with an H97 chipset motherboard. Get an Intel core i5, a cheaper one will do. This will help maximize your performance and give you future upgrade options.

SOmeone mentioned drivers and really I've had more problems with Nvidia drivers in recent years than AMD. I don't think either gets a win for drivers though.

For those talking about bottleneck with vRAM, don't worry about it. the R9 280 always has 3GB vRAM. I run a monitor to watch vRAM usage always while I play games. For games from 2013 like Bioshock Infinte and Tomb Raider and others the most I have ever seen used is 1800MB with max settings. Chances are games will start to use around 2.5GB this year and next, but your GPU will also age a little. You will still play mostly ultra settings, but you will drop AA by one and still manage very high settings, and AA is the biggest use of vRAM, so that will keep any bottleneck from ever happening.

I will also agree on doing intel over amd am3+ its old and dated with intel you stay more up to the day with them and not buying the past today

Right, most games released over the past year or so won't reach over 2gb. I can name 4 that surpass 2 gb though. Watch Dogs (3.5Vram) on max, Titanfall (3.5gb) on max BF4 (2.5gb) on max and Wolfenstein (2.8gb) on Max.
