If i was to use the asus Thunderboltex ii on a asus z97 pro motherboard, would it allow me to plug in a thunderbolt display. The reason I'm confused is because on asus's website it shows a display port cable coming out of the thunderboltex ii and goes into the motherboards display port. Should the dp cable not be going into the graphics card?

Yes if you have a dedicated graphics card you would plug it into the graphics card instead of the motherboard.

It looks like the device you are talking about only supports the following boards though:
Compatible Model
-MAXIMUS VI EXTREME
-SABERTOOTH Z87
-Z87-PRO
-Z87-PRO(V EDITION)
-Z87-PLUS
-Z87-PLUS(VivoMouse EDITION)
-Z87-A
-Z87-A(NFC EXPRESS EDITION)

Thunderbolt uses displayport protocols for video and can work in any displayport without needing the asus Thunderboltex ii. But only the display data will be transmitted to the monitor so you can't use the data ports on the monitor (usb, firewire, etc). The asus z97 pro already has dp so you can just plug the monitor in there. If you have a graphics card, you can plug it into that dp as well. You only need the asus Thunderboltex ii to use thunderbolt's data side, so for a thunderbolt external hdd or ssd. It is not a video card and that's why the dp cable goes from the mobo (or graphics card) to the addon card. This is so that it is able to transmit video, by using the igpu or graphics card's output.

Thanks for that reply! Would there be any solution to get the i/o camera and speakers on the monitor working? Because i thought what would have happened is that all the i/o can be streamed through the tb_header on the motherboard?

In that case you would want the asus Thunderboltex ii or any other thunderbolt add on card.

Do you know if this will give me a fully functioning thunderbolt display? Also if i put the DP cable from the Asus thunderboltex II into the GPU instead of the motherboard DP header, would it run of the GPU and work?

The gpu that it's connected to is just for video so shouldn't matter. It should be fully functional but can't give a definite answer as its rare for pc to have tb. Who knows there might be some driver issue.
