Hi, I've been trying to overclock my new Intel Pentium G3258 on a MSI Z97 PC Mate for a while now, but i just can't seem to get it to work. I have tried using OC Genie however, every time i switch it on in the bios it does absolutely nothing. I have also tried overclocking manually although even if I only change a few settings in the OC menu, it completely ruins my entire system and forces me to restore from a previous backup point. My motherboard drivers are up to date and my system runs perfectly. Please Help!

Be sure you have the latest BIOS for that board when you use the G3258: http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97_PC_Mate.html#down-bios

Reset to optimized defaults. Don't use software for OC'ing. Make your changes to the unlocked CPU clock multiplier manually in BIOS. Save and exit. Don't change anything else at first, just increment the multiplier a click at a time and test for stability with something like Intel Burn Test between increments. Watch core tmps during the IBT runs.

Whenever I try to run the bios software update it says: 'the version of this file is no compatible with the version of windows you're running' and when I check the website for other versions of the bios update i can't find any downloads other than the main one. Any suggestions on what i can do? (By the way i'm running windows 7 home premium 64bit)

Use the Live Update 6 that comes on the utility DVD. It will find the correct BIOS version for your board and do the update automatically. That's what I use to update the BIOS when I build with an MSI board. LU6 runs in the Windows Environment. You can also get the latest version of LU6 at the website: http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97_PC_Mate.html#down-util...

Thank you for being so helpful, I am now able to overclock with ease. After starting out with 4ghz i was experiencing blue screens after logging in so i increased the cpu core voltage to 1.250v and now it runs perfectly! I aiming for around 4.6-4.7 ghz depending on how stable the temps are. Thanks again!

Outstanding! I have wanted to play around with that unlocked Pentium, but never 'pulled the trigger' as they say. It sounds like you have one of the good chips. Even if you can't get any more out of it, 4 GHz is great. Along with the fast Intel Gen 4 IPC of the Haswell, that clock will make the dual core a good gamer.

One last thing I would like to ask is that how do i increase the cpu core voltage past the safe voltage on the msi motherboard i have? I am unable to reach the high overclocks i want because my motherboard doesn't allow me to increase the cpu core voltage past 1.3v. Most motherboards I've seen have a cpu core setting called manual however I am unable to find a setting like that on my motherboard. Is there a way to get around this?

You are very lucky! Updating the BIOS via LU is VERY RISKY! Many ppl have bricked their MSI mobos when attempting this method!

I have been using LU since the beginning version on every MSI board I've built with. (And I've built a lot). It has never failed me. That's the first thing I use doing a new MSI-based build; run LU to update the BIOS if necessary. The Windows BIOS update pgms are far better than depending on the crude firmware in the BIOS to run an update. IMO. Of course, one has to have a stable Windows environment. If you have an unstable, always crashing Windows... one loaded with crap running in the background... full of ad-ware, bloat-ware, and nag-ware... yes, best not use it.
