The motherboard being the determining factor is a long outdated thing....that goes back to the 775 mobos and the need to run a FSB equal to or greater than the DRAM freq. Whatever DRAM you run, Yes the mobo needs to be able to run it, but the true determining factor is the MC (memory controller) located in the CPU. That will vary from one CPU to another within a given model, depending on how strong the individual CPU's MC is. With an 8320 - very, very few can carry 2400, many can carry 2133 (generally 2 sticks), almost all can carry 2 sticks of 1866 and many 4 sticks. Rather than post a baseline DRAM freq for the FX CPUs, AMD has stated they can run up to 1866 at 1 Stick per channel (testing done was with 4GB sticks)...
