I have decided i would rather spend as little as possible as the PS4 has tempted me with some of its exclusives so i bought one, now i have £900 for a total system as shown above.
Is this a worthwhile purchase for gaming and editing?
how much worse would it be than a Xeon 1230 v3 pc with gtx 770 4gb?
I hear nothing but bad things about AMD and their heat and power problems but for £260 is the 8320 and r9 270x a decent combo?

Ripjaws will work with the Evo. You will have to slide the fan up and down, for installation and removal. I was running ripjaws in my system, before I bought my Ares kit. I have the 212 plus, which isn't really much different. H81 boards are bargain basement boards. They work, but they do not have many features, normally. They are all limited to 2x Ram slots, and none will support broadwell, should that interest you. They tend to have fewer sata slots, and do not support raid configs. They do not have active cooling on the VRM's, nor have as good of power phase setup. If an H81 is necessary, then fine. But if a better board is affordable, go with the better board. Here is my same build with an IPS monitor from LG. Changed the ram to...

This would be better. Better CPU/motherboard, little more SSD storage, better PSU, and better GPU.

My only worry is the R9's reputation for crashing and overheating, bearing in mind it will be handling workloads for long periods of time.
Would this be a good middle ground? And would it be worth the extra money?

The R9 280 is just a rebadged HD 7950. You are thinking of reference model R9 290/290x. My system was less expensive and had a much better motherboard. Asus monitors are better than AOC.

70 quid motherboards have more features and are more reliable compared to 35 quid motherboards.
