Hello all,

So I just built a new computer for my boys and I'm attempting to overclock it (I've done this to all of my computers in the past), but I'm having a major issue with the CPU temperature. At least according to what HWMonitor is telling me.

I have not done any overclocking to it yet whatsoever (I just finished installing Windows 7 64 last night) and with both the stock CPU cooler AND the aftermarket Zalman cooler, as soon as I run Prime95 the temperature spikes from an idle of 46c all the way up to 80+c. As soon as I exit Prime95, the temperature gradually decreases.

From what I've seen in my past builds, that has never happened, as the temperature gradually increases. Another note is that my temperatures jump around almost every few seconds anywhere between 40-60c when I'm just opening a new tab, opening a program, etc.

The case has great airflow and I even took the side panel off to be sure. I have tried re applying the thermal paste (a thin layer, not caked) on both the stock and Zalman coolers and the temperatures are the same. There is a lot of pressure when both coolers clamp down so I doubt it's that, but who knows... I also tried Speedfan and it says Temp: -47c and Core: 0c so that doesn't tell me squat.

I'm considering one (or a couple) of the following:
- My CPU is bad
- My motherboard is bad
- The thermal paste doesn't work well (I chose Junpus due to a test of over 20 different pastes)
- The coolers aren't making good contact (both surfaces are flat/smooth)

Does anybody have any other ideas of what it could possibly be? Or know from experience? Any input is appreciated.
