Game CPU usage too high?

I've had this PC for a year now and it's been running fine until last night. When I run a game CPU usage hits 100% for some reason even when I run games on low.

CPU i7 4770k
GPU Nvidia GTX Titan

What is your CPU usage when the system is idle? What are your CPU temps under load? Have you overclocked?

While idle CPU usage is at 1-2%. Under load temps are between 40-50c. Not overclocked.

What games does the CPU hit 100% in? Are there any games that don't make the CPU run at 100%? What frequency does the CPU operate at when under load?

Every game I've tested so far pushes the CPU to 90-100% (portal 2, FFXIV, Diablo 3, Borderlands 2). CPU usage seems to hit 100% only when I'm moving in game and goes down when I'm idle. Detected frequency is 3.49343 Hz.

Well the CPU seems to be operating fine. How high is your fps in those games? What happens if you max out the settings?

Did you recently update your GPU drivers? I have seen the same problem happen a few times with particular builds. I realise that these should only affect the GPU, but if something is not being correctly loaded onto the GPU then it may be left to the CPU.

Did you also notice any FPS drops at roughly the same time in those games?
