Hello, I just bought an Asus R9 280 to replace my aging HD 5770.
Opened my case to discover I have a Xion XON-700P12N power supply!
I never knew I had a Tier 5 psu for the last 4 years. The horror! (I don't swap components/upgrade frequently, obviously)
Anyways, any recommendations for a new psu? I want to replace the Xion before I even try installing the R9 280. I don't want to fry my old rig. I was thinking of something like a Seasonic M12II 620. Anything better or cheaper I should consider? I'm not a miner, just a little gaming.

Intel i7 950
3x 2GB DDR3-1600
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
(soon to be) Asus R9 280
any other info needed?

All recommendations are appreciated, thanks in advance!

Are you in the US?
This is a great PSU, made by Super Flower
Rosewill Capstone 650W $59.99

Or for $10 more, you can get the 750W semi-modular version
Rosewill Capstone 750M - $69.99

Yes I'm in the US. Would you recommend either of those over the Seasonice M12 620?
Price isn't a big concern, I'm more interested in getting it quickly, like via Amazon prime shipping.

the superflower ones are on par from what i've read to the seasonic, i would compare warranties and shipping options.

The advantage of that Seasonic, is that it is full modular. That's something I really like.

The Capstone 750M is semi modular which is almost as good (the 24pin and 8pin are permanently attached, the rest of the cables are modular) but this one is Gold while the Seasonic is bronze. The Capstone 750M also will give you more headroom at 750W over 620W.

All that said though, I think in the end I'd go with the full modular myself. That Seasonic costs a little more, but you don't need Gold, and you don't need 750W. I'd go Seasonic of the three.

and honestly, how are you going to use a psu 90% of the time without the 24 pin + 8pin cables?

The only advantage to full modular over semi modular for me, is if you plan on either sleeving the cables yourself, or buying an aftermarket set of sleeved cables. Other than that, I agree, semi vs. full modular doesn't matter at all.

So if the OP isn't planning on sleeving, then I guess I kind of contradicted myself there :D
The Capstone semi-modular would make more sense if that's the case. Gold rated and more watts for headroom at a cheaper price.

Thank you both for your help. I was also considering a Rosewill Capstone 650W unit. Any thoughts?
It seems like most of these are going to cost around $80 on Amazon, but I'm looking for the prime 2-day shipping.

Yeah, I don't care much to sleeve the cables, I can't even see inside my case where it sits under my desk.
I'm all for more watts if it doesn't cost more.

Great deal on a 850w made by Super Flower.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $69.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Thanks for the tip, that is a great unit. I don't pay much attention to prices after rebates, because I don't have much faith in them after being ripped off a couple times. The price at checkout is all that matters to me. But I like the idea of an 850W unit, in case I want to crossfire another R9 280 in the future. It couldn't hurt, right?

Thanks again to everyone for all the help.
In the end, I bought the Rosewill Capstone 650W unit you recommended to start with. I decided I won't bother with crossfire, I've always been a single card gamer. And it should have plenty of power for a single R9 280.
I might even try overclocking the card a little, but that would also be a new thing for me.
