Cleaned computer, mouse suddenly doesn't work.

I use a Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse, and have been for well over 5 years.

We've been using the same mouse for a very long time. We used it on an old dell computer with Windows XP with no problems, and we've been using it on an hp compact computer with Windows 7 without any problems either.

We've cleaned our computer multiple times in the past: turned it off, unplugged everything, took apart the modem and dusted everything. We've been able to plug our mouse back in and have it work fine without any problem.

Until now.

My mom cleaned the computer this morning. She told me that when she had plugged everything back in and went to turn on the computer, the mouse wasn't working. She took it out and inserted it multiple times into the USB port on the back of the modem to no avail.

When she told me about it, I decided to check it out for myself. I plugged it into all 3 of the ports on our computer, and while the mouse could still click and had fully functional forward/back buttons, the pointer itself wouldn't work. It didn't matter how much I scrolled the wheel--the pointer would barely move.

I tried a few solutions. Unplugging it and replugging it up didn't work, not even with the restart. I tried going into device manager, uninstalling it, and then reinstalling it, but that didn't work either. The driver's are up to date, and Logitech's SetPoint didn't help at all. From what I know, the computer didn't update while it was being cleaned, so I don't think it's outdated.

We've never had this problem in the past, with any of our computers or mice. Windows acknowledges that the mouse is plugged in and installs the drivers automatically, but the pointer still barely works. I've used this mouse for a very long time and I don't think the problem lies with age considering the fact that this is the first time it's messed up.

What should I do?

I've tried it in all 3 usb ports available and the cursor still doesn't respond. I'm using another mouse, I don't know what brand but it came with the computer when we first got it a few years ago, and it's working just fine.

I cleaned the ball sensors already. The problem itself doesn't seem to be the friction between the marble and the sensors because I've dealt with that before, and if it was the case, then a quick wipe down would always do the trick.

I don't know though. Maybe the sensors did somehow stop working, but it doesn't make sense considering that the mouse worked just fine 12 hours ago.

Its dead. use what you have or get another one. Everything that uses electricity will break eventually. You need to plan for that and have spares.

I hope you know your harddrive will eventually break and that you already have important files backed up to another device.
