I am going to upgrade my cpu and mobo pretty soon. I have been pretty much set on an AMD build due to the price. However I have found some potentially in my price range intel stuff. Would it be a significant improvement to spend the extra cash?

My current choice is AMD FX8320 with ASUS M5A97 R2.0

I have possible access to an Intel i7-970 for around $200. Is there a good mobo to go with that that would keep me sort of near the price im at with the AMD combo? Going a bit higher is fine if it a worthwhile upgrade. Thanks for any input!

pass on it!!!.. you're better off with what you have until you can make a real upgrade. ( 8320 )

My budget probably shouldn't go over $300 at the very most.

And what do you mean pass on it? Don't get the 970? Or were you saying the 8320 isn't good?

And I would go with this board over the MSI if you can swing the extra $10. It would money very very well spent!

This option will also leave you the ability to upgrade to the i7 4790k in the future, as well as the new CPU's Intel will be releasing in the future on the 1150 socket.

pass on the 920. what do you want an old, tired, hot, not much faster than what it replaced processor for?

you could get something as old as a 2500(k) for less money and get better performance. ( if you can find one ).......... you can get a speedy Intel quad for $180.

So it seems like everyone's opinion here is to skip the amd cpu. Are they really that much worse?

AMD is not bad, however Intel is definitely better. It also has a much better upgrade path.

we'll be seeing new sockets from both camps soon. I would still pass on the 920. personally would take the 8320.

however, withing reason, a $180-230 1155 socket quad or xeon would be my pick. xeon first.

When I look up Xeon cpu's on newegg they all say "server processors". that the same as any other processor? It's throwing me off.

it is a server processor. check the motherboard manufacturers site to see if whatever board you are using supports it.

server processor will run cooler/has no graphics chip/not a good overclocker........ for that you want a standard "K" processor.
