I have MSI 790GX-G65 motherboard, was running AMD Phenom II 965 CPU, but it went bad after overheating (reached 120c, both CPU and PSU refused to work afterwards). As I don't have the money to buy new MB and CPU (I have future plans for i7 4790k), I need a temporary solution for a few months.. Im buying AMD Phenom II 1045t, but it isn't supported by the MB in default, but some sources are saying that it will after bios update.

The problem is, how can I update the bios if I don't have working x4 CPU and x6 isnt supported?

Did your CPU fan fail or something? If it wasn't OC'ed is should've never been able to hit 120C even with a crappy CPU cooler.

Reason why to only buy used PC parts when you absolutely need to save money. Because it could be damaged, or it could be stolen. Also it has no warranty, the manufacturer's warranty is for the original purchaser only. You don't know if it was heavily OC'ed or overheated, which would shorten it's lifespan and/or cause damage to the CPU itself. I'm not saying don't buy used, I'm saying only buy used if you absolutely have to. A new part is guaranteed to work and has a manufacturer's warranty should...

MSI's website says it is supported http://us.msi.com/support/mb/790GXG65.html#support-cpu, not sure if it requires a BIOS update.
Since it's a temporary upgrade, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a CPU...

Also how did you manage to get your 965 to 120C???

80 eur for CPU (buying used) doesn't seem much, I will be using it for about 6 months. My upgrade costs will be around 500eur.

I have a broken Cooler Master V8, with the middle fan taken out and replaced with smaller one, without case, only radiator. Turns out the change was too dramatic. This wasn't the first time it overheated to 120c, it's been like 5 times in 3 month period, usually during rendering

It must've been heavily OC'ed or overvolted... Even the stock cooler should've been fine... 120C is almost double the thermal limit for Phenom II CPUs. The CPU should've throttled or shut down before going over 70C. Something must've been wrong with the temp sensor.

But since you said you're using it for 6 months, the price is fine. Also be really careful buying used pc parts off of sites like ebay or craigslist.

If it comes in original packaging and the seller has 100% feedback as a seller, then it should generally be safe. I bought a Sapphire HD 6970 off of ebay and didn't have any issues with it.
