Hey, I recently decided I wanted to build my first gaming pc for things like COD, Skyrim, HotS (hopefully soon) and games like that released in the future at high or at least a lot better than normal settings.

Upon going to my local computer hardware store for some advice I was told that this was the worst time to build a X97 setup. He said that in a couple of months X99 and DDR4 will be everywhere and I would have just wasted my money and need to upgrade pretty soon to X99 and such.

The thing is the X99 setup is so feckin expensive right now and I think it is way more than I need anyway. On the other hand I don't want to have to upgrade a X97 in the next 3 year's at least.

What do you guys think. Is there still a lot of life left in the X97 setup or is it on its last legs.

This is the build I had in mind.

Go for x97, it will save you a lot of money and will still be very common for the upcoming 3 years. People are not ready to transition to x99 quite yet, most wait for price drops and then do so. It takes a couple to few years for it to come into the "norm".

Actually upgrading to something as soon as it comes out in the PC world is stupid. Stick to DDR3 and get yourself a 4770k and a 780ti. Make sure your board has SLi so you can buy another in 5 years and the system will comfortably see you through the decade.

2x780tis and a x97/z97 setup will cost you the same or less than a x99 system with a weaker gaming CPU, DDR4 and no GPU. You can comfortably game in 4k at medium in many games with a dual 780ti and it will see you through the entire generation of console gaming at maxed out setting as well as being overkill for just about any 1080p setup for at least the next 6-8 years.

GTX 970 wasn't available at the time of posting, so yes, I would get that. Maybe even two.

Like the DDR2 - 3 switch, we're still in the formative stages of DDR4. I would shy away from it until the mainstream DDR4 revision that supports it is out. The prices fall through the floor as soon as that happens as the system building companies (Dell/HP etc) make the economies of scale much higher. In addition to that, at that stage all the kinks should be ironed out and any standards changes (like the 1.5v debacle circa Ivy Bridge) should be set in stone.
