I am building my computer and I was told that I didn't need it.. what's the word?

If you are going to overclock you should buy it. Otherwise, the stock CPU cooler is typically fine.

If that is the case, do not worry about getting an aftermarket cooler. The stock cooler is designed to adequately cool the CPU under normal circumstances and should do you fine.
