I understand that the 280x will be the superior card, but by how much? I also understand that that gap can widen if we overclock the 280x but for comparison purposes lets assume that its not (many of the reviews that test the 280x with regards to fps on certain settings for certain games keep the 280x at its stock levels).

Anyone? Am I splitting hairs or is there a significant difference here?

From all of the research I have done after overclocking the r9 280 it will perform almost the same as an X version. +- 5 fps i think

I am currently in the process of overclocking my graphics card to see if it actually will perform like the benchmarks of a r9 280x. I'll try and update if I succeed

a 280 is a rebranded 7950 whereas 280x is a rebranded 7970. An oc 280 can certainly reach a stock 280x but the 280x will still be able to surpass it by overclocking. Rather than getting a 280 look at the 285 as it preforms better than the 280.

I'll have to check some benchmarks out, for some reason I thought the 285 was below the 280 despite, obviously, being a higher number.

The 285 is around around 18% more expensive and only performs 5-7% better performance.
