Hi everyone,

I've been having an issue for several days with my desktop where the screen freezes for a few seconds and then comes back. It only occurs when there's an update to the screen such as dragging a window around, opening a video, or switching between active windows. Everything seems to still be processing because if I play a video, the sound is unaffected and I can alt-f4 out of it to recover the constantly frozen screen with no noticeable lag to the sound. Mouse movements are also conserved when i drag around in paint, but the screen only updates when i stop moving. It freezes in safe mode as well.

The problem started when I downloaded winzip and accidently clicked the "Install Astromenda." I opened up starcraft2, played for a few hours with no problems, went to bed with the title screen on and came back to a frozen blurred title screen. I've since then re-installed Windows 7 x64 and deleted the entire Windows.old folder, but the problem still persists. I also ran malwarebytes and spybot S&D, but they didn't find anything. I've defragmented and did a disk check.

I've had my desktop for about four years with no problems. Here's my build:
Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B
Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus - 550W Power Supply
GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb Quad-Core 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Processor HDZ955FBGIBOX
Western Digital WD Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ
XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
ViewSonic VX1962wm

Can anyone lend me a hand? I'm completely baffled at what's causing this. At this point, I don't care about any of my information. I'm open to do a fresh install of windows if someone will guide me through it. Let me know what information you need. Thanks in advance.

Solution
Nevermind, I fixed it. It turns out my power strip was pretty old. (Manufactured in 1993!) I've plugged my desktop and monitor directly into the wall, and the problems completed disappeared.

Thanks again for the help.
It was much appreciated.
First I would run both Seatools and Memtest86. When you run memtest do it individually on the modules as testing multiple modules can create false errors. Run at least 3-4 passes on each module, preferably 7, and yes, this WILL take some time so be patient with the memtest. In Seatools run the short DST and if all passes run the long generic. After that we can go from there. There's no point in reinstalling windows in any fashion if the problem is basic hardware and reoccurs after installation. Both utilities are free and are standard throughout this community.

Hey darkbreeze,

Thanks for helping. I've ran Seatools. The short DST test and Long Generic Test both passed with no issues.
I've also ran Memtest86 for 7 passes. No errors were found. I did notice that when I was in the bios changing boot order, the freezing was occuring there as well. Also, the first time I booted from USB to run memtest, the monitor kept flashing on and off with a black screen, and my pc tower would beep once.

What do you recommend to do next?
