Where does my IP address originate:

a) my Network Interface Card?
b) my modem (which connects to the NIC via an Ethernet cable, not WiFi)?
c) other?

Solution
This gets a little complicated. If you mean your real internet address, it is assigned from a router at your ISP that gives an IP address to your modem (cable modem / dsl modem).

Usually you have a router built in to the modem that can share this real internet address and gives private IP addresses to its clients (your PC, tablet, IP printer, etc). The private IP address is not a real internet address, just a place marker so that the router knows which device to forward data through based on this set of numbers.

assuming you left all the settings on your modem and PC at their default values, then your IPs are assigned by your modem. pretty much every router you will ever have in your life automatically assumes the DHCP role and declares itself the ultimate authority in handing out IPs.
