I built a brand new rig, powered it up.and everything worked, installed Windows to my pc and everything was working fine. I then took my pc to my room, plugged it into an extension lead and everything lit up in my pc, I press the power button then it made a pop noise and the electrics went off. After inspection I found the fuse in the plug had gone, and a capacitor inside the psu had exploded leaving white remains over the inside of the psu. I checked the plugs ect, they were all working fine. The psu is an rm850. Has this damaged my rig? And why did this happen?

You won't be able to tell the extent of the damage until you get a new PSU hooked up and test everything out. If the PSU's protective features worked, it may just be the PSU. It probably had a weak or faulty capacitor - the RMs are known to have less than stellar capacitors. If anything else is fried, you'll probably be able to get Corsair to replace them or reimburse you the replacement cost.

Awesome! You may want to go ahead and test your components anyway, i.e. MemTest86 for your DRAM, Seagate Sea Tools for your hard drives, AIDA64 or OCCT for total system stability, etc.

Good luck with it!
