Hi I'm really looking for some help on making the right choice. the best graphic cards iv had so far are 2x 4870 power colour in crossfire for over 2 years but i want to run direct x 11 now.
My pc specs are
Asrock 990FX extreme3 motherboard .
FX-8350 processor
32 gig of ram
HX1000i corsair power supply
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB
1.5TB hard drive plus 1TB external drive
In a XPREDATOR case so plenty of air flow.

Another thing is would i be better off crossfire or sli or single card. I know my board don't support the 3.0 PCI slot but does have 2x 16 PCI lanes and a 4x lane. Think I'm correct lol Any help would be nice or advise on which way to go thank you.

If you're on a single monitor a powerful enough single GPU will be good enough, until you've like 4k. If you've Tri Monitor, SLI/ CFX makes sense. What resolution is your current monitor and do you wish to upgrade monitor or buy more in future?
PCI 2 and 3 have no difference in performance whatsoever. What's your budget?

Well the monitor iv got at the min is Asus VH242H 1920x1080 has got HDMI never used it tho... I got 2x MSI R6970 lightning editions 2GB GDDR5 in crossfire but i got them second hand if i run them at the core clock they come at which is 940MHZ they crash even doing windows base score get error at bottom saying " Display driver stopped responding and has recovered " iv took them down to 880 MHZ they run but if i go to try a game the screen goes black and freezes the whole pc .... I don't get it unless faulty cards.Iv tried all drivers still same.... My budget is around the 150 mark lol. The problems I'm getting wont be anything to do with my screen will it ? Thx
