Looking to upgrade brothers PC for his birthday, could I run a 7950 on 400w PSU without trouble?

i7-4770k Liquid Cooling
8GB DDR3 2 Modules
1x Desktop Blue 7,200rpm SATA
3x 120mm Fans
400w PSU (Not sure of the brand, seems to be up to spec though)

Would a 7950 be safe to run?

As an after thought, would a 6970 run on this system?

NO NOT AT ALL! You should look for a good quality 600w for your system if you plan to overclock anything. A 550w if you plan on running stock only. If you plan to overclock AND crossfire the hd7950(r9 280) at some point, you should look at a good quality 850w PSU.

Here is a great quality unit for a good price: http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=52174&vpn=SS%2D620G...

Even if it worked, I don't think you'd want to run your power supply so close to its maximum. I'd say that machine needs a new PSU, especially since the rest of it sounds sorta high-end. 850 W is a bit overkill unless you're going for SLI or Crossfire. A high-quality 650-watt PSU is plenty for basically any single-card system, and even that isn't strictly necessary for everyone.

The HD 6970 probably draws more power than the 7950.

A quality 550W will suffice.

I just said that you really don't ever need more than a good 650 W or so for any single card setup available. Yes, for a mid-range card like this, 550 W will indeed suffice. :)

The 7950 draws 200 watts (I have one) & the 6970 draws 250 watts. LukaBoki has given you great advice for a power supply & oxide is correct on the 6970 being more power hungry. A quality PSU is the most important part of your system.

Are you sure about that? :D

I don't know the PSU because I had it built by someone else.

Thanks for responding so quickly. Figured I'd ask about it here, I had some conflicting information elsewhere that was 2-3 years old.

I'm sure about that, though I'm not considering Titan Z and the R9 295X2 to be "single cards" as they are technically SLI/Crossfire setups.
