The one you find cheaper, both are excellent cards, but 290 will take lead in multiple displays/ 4k.

The Tri X will take a slight lead as its an overall better card. Its a very cool and quiet card compared to others, so I'd get 290 here :)

the sapphire has a better cooling solution then the windforce; gigabyte cheaped out on their 290/290x windforce cards and used the EXACT same cooler as they used for the 780ti... of course the design of the boards are different so the cooler doesn't actually fit the card right and as a result it does a poor job keeping the card cool. so technically the sapphire will run quieter and cooler... draw less power and likely last longer as a result.

my bad.

Not sure where you are that the 780 is the same price as the 290... typically the 290 is significantly cheaper... but setting that aside. The 290 is about the same speed or even a little bit faster then the 780 at stock settings. The 780 however overclocks a little better, and likely would be a little bit faster when both are under max overclocks.

Performance depends a lot on cooling system. For reference cards, you really won't feel any differnece besides some more FPS on 290 on multi display or 4k.
BUT, no one gets reference cards for gaming,

better cooling system=cooler card=better headroom for OCability=better performance.

This's true for all cards. You won't be able to OC WINDFORCE much thanks to its cooler (or alteast not on decent temps), and once 290 is OCed, it'd easily take away all from 780. 290 is better.

if it was me making the choice... i would go with the gtx780... but then i only have one 1080p monitor. If i had 3, 1080p monitors, i'd probably go for the r9-290
