Did I ruin my HDD?

I built a PC yesterday with a 250gb ssd and a 2tb hdd. Everything went well with the build, and I turned on the pc and installed windows 8.1 onto the ssd while the hdd was not plugged in. After windows was up and running I installed a bunch of programs that were on my old computer, but stupidly didn't install any drivers for the motherboard or anything else. I then connected the hdd and found that it was not listed under "my pc". I asked my friend about this and he said the my hard drive is screwed, but he didn't elaborate. Do you know if I totally ruined it or is there any way to fix the drive/find it on my computer? If need be, I can always go buy a new one but I figure I'd ask here first just to be sure.

Solution
run diskmgmt.msc and see if its listed there. If it is just rt click on it and intialize or assign it a drive letter if its already formatted & partitioned.
Your friend, I think he's wrong. Because the hard drive was out while you installed Windows, Windows did not bother detecting it and installing the necessary driver for it which enables Windows to actually work with the hard drive. The driver enables Windows to both recognize and write files to and from the hard drive, and Windows installs some drivers of detected attached components during the Windows installation. What you have to do is go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download and install the driver for your exact one.

That is all my total guess on what happened, so please don't hate me if that's wrong.

Thank you so much. It worked like a charm :) I think my friend was just being a dick because this is my first time.
