Hi,

Completely silly, I bent some of the cpu pins and I doubt there is a return after this.

The m/b is an Asus M4A87TD and the cpu is (was) an AMD Phenom x6 1090T black edition.

What can I replace it with that is similar or better? I don't seem to be able find this cpu anymore. Ancient, I know...

Thanks,

Mike

Replacing the Motherboard and CPU is up to you and how much you want to spend. If you have a large enough budget, then go for it. Otherwise, just look for something that is compatible with your motherboard (and no, the FX series chips are not compatible) and replace the chip (if the pins cannot be repaired).

Which motherboard do you have. A quick Google search shows both the EVO and USB3 versions of the ASUS M4A87TD. Both CPU Support lists looked similar, but we need to make sure.

MFG?

AM3 cpus seem impossible to find. My 1090T is £100 on eBay which is crazy for a 3 year old cpu. Am I not better of buying a new mb/cpu combo? Say the x6 8350? (I don't know much about what is out there these days)

FX 6300/6350, 6 core, probably slightly higher performance than your old chip, depending on your current level of OC vs. how high you clocked the new chip. 8320/8350, 8 core, lower/higher clock speeds.
Quite decent 990fx boards can be had for $100 ish dollars, so swapping both is between $250 and $350 all in.
Sabertooth plus 8350 is around $400.

Your cooler may or may not work, but it "should", assuming you have a decent aftermarket cooler. Stock coolers for those chips are pretty meh.

Or you can succumb to all the "Intel or gtfo" posts surely to follow. But everything from a 6300 up are pretty solid chips.

I will definitely try to salvage the old cpu first. If I ever manage to get it off the heatsink. Tried hairdryer, no success.

I have the evo version

My point is that £100 ($160) sounds a lot for a 3 year old cpu on eBay. If i can get a new one + mb that will be faster for say £200

200 pounds is.. $300 ish dollars? Yes you can definitely get a decent AM3+ mobo and FX series chip for that.
Quite likely a 990fx board and an 8320 with a bit of looking. Which would definitely outperform the 1090t and have OC headroom.
