I had always planned on making a completely new set of cables (not just extensions) for my psu, however recently I did a little work on my pc and found it wasn't booting because I had accidentally used a rosewill CPU cable instead of he CPU cable that came with my PSU. This concerns me, as now I don't know for sure if custom cables will even work with my psu.

is there anything I should know about specific psu cable compatibility before i buy all the custom cable things i need? my specific power supply is an EVGA 650G 80+ gold. thanks for your time

Cable are just cables. If they have connectors on both sides that are compatible, then it really doesn't matter. Inspect the Rosewill cable. Are the connectors identical on the PSU side? Did you plug it into the PSU in the correct position? If not that could be the cause. On the motherboard side, of course the connectors have to be compatible - few custom build motherboards use incompatible connectors - they won't be able to sell well if they do.
