I'm not asking if it's better/more convenient to have one card as opposed to sli/crossfire/dualGPUcards. I just want to know which has more raw power in this case? Both would be working with 3GB vram obviously. I have one 280 at the moment and plan to add another soon inexpensively, whereas upgrading to a 780ti or 980 on release would cost me my wife's arm and leg ^__^

Just keep in mind that not all games can use xfire mode.

The 280 is a 7950 rebranded with a slightly higher clock (depending on manufacturer) 280x is a 7970. Just take a look at 7950 Xfire benchmarks to get an idea of the performance levels. When and IF the game supports Xfire.

280 and 280x are not just total rebrands. they use slightly better memory and are slightly tweaked. so their performance will not be identical to their HD 7xxx counter parts.

Which is why I said an idea of performance, it will get close enough to encourage/discourage purchases. The slight tweaks dont impact the cards that much, hence why they can be paired in Xfire with the 79xx model cards.
