I just bought a asus 750ti OC graphics card. You can see the rest of my build in my sig. I have a HEC HP585DB psu, by the looks of it only supplies 15amp to the 12v. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339009

I would love not to have to put any more money into this cheap setup but what are the dangers of using this cheap psu for a few months while i search for the perfect psu deal? Danger of frying my whole comp or just the power supply?

Solution

even though that model IS a corsair branded PSU and it is allegedly a gold rated PSU, it's not that great. it was built by some new Chinese OEM that doesn't have a very good track record. all the good PSU manufacturers are in Taiwan. if fact, Corsair and newegg were giving that PSU out for FREE (after $30 rebate) about a month ago. i "bought" 3 of them to use for small repair jobs. when you system is consuming so little power, you wont see any saving on your power bill no matter how efficient the PSU is rated...

When PSUs go they tend to take stuff with them. The GTX 750 ti requires 20 amps of the 12V. If it was a bit closer I'd say go for it but with that difference that isn't really safe. What amperage was the original psu? The 750ti can run off ~300watts.

your PSU can (according to the specs) provide 180 watts on the 12V rail. the 750 Ti consumes under 70 watts of power in total at peak performance. you should be just fine with that PSU.

EDIT: 20 Amperes @ 12 V = 240 watts. total overkill for a low level GPU like the 750 Ti.
here is a chart showing total power consumption of the entire system while playing Metro Last light:

the total power consumed never went over 145 watts. even if you overclock the hell out of this card you wont pass 175 watts.

Original psu is 175w. 14amps on the 12v. Well i have heard a lot when people say now to go with a cheap psu. Should i just order one? If so i was looking at the corsair cs450m. It is a gold rated 450w psu.

look into this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438012&ignorebbr=1
it is 500 watts, bronze rated, made with better components and by a better OEM, and is $30 after rebate.

or if you want that gold rated one, wait for a sale. they go on sale once every other month.

EDIT: found the thread on slickdeals about this PSU's sale when it was Free: http://slickdeals.net/f/7050700-corsair-csm-series-cs450m-450w-80-plus-gold-certified-modular-active-pfc-power-supply-free-after-rebate-coupon-free-shipping-newegg-com

Hey i accidently bought this psu from staples, so i can return it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438016&cm_re=Evga_500w-_-17-438-016-_-Product
Is there much of a difference between these two? I will probably be using this on a future build as well
