New GPU; No Signal to Monitor

Greetings,

The fan on my 8800GS evidently failed as it partially melted. I'm not sure if there was damage to the card itself, but I decided to replace it outright with an R7 260X.

After installation, I found that my monitor (LG W2343T-PF) wasn't getting signal. The video card is powered (the fan is spinning), and detected by my motherboard (it would beep otherwise). But I just can't get a picture via the DVI cable (I don't have a VGA or any other type of cable to try, unfortunately).

I tried disconnecting the power from the GPU and booting using the onboard video, and the monitor worked fine. Catalyst driver installation failed, I presume because it didn't detect an ATI GPU. I even tried disabling the onboard video entirely, but I still don't get any picture when I reconnect the 260X.

Do you think there might be an issue with the PCIE slot or motherboard itself, and that it wasn't just my 8800GS that initially failed? What else should I do to troubleshoot? Thank you for your help.

Make sure its locked into the pcie slot nearest the cpu. Make sure your mobo is pcie 1.1 and x8 or greater. Check that the power supply connectors are on properly. Make sure that you've got the monitor cable coming out of the right port on the card (eg DVI-I not DVI-D). And whether you need an adapter eg DVI/VGA.

Make sure the graphics card is properly seated in the GPU slot, the DVI cable is pushed in firmly on the graphics card (tighten the screws just to be safe), and that the DVI connection is also firmly in place on your monitor.

Only one PCIE slot on the board; board is PCIE 2.0 x16. Just to test, I tried using a 6-pin adapter rather than the native 6-pin PSU connection, but no difference. GPU powers up, but no picture. Monitor uses DVI-I, but I tried both the DVI-D and DVI-I ports on the card.

Yep, tried reseating, no difference. Monitor tested fine using the onboard video, so it wouldn't seem to be the monitor or cable that are the issue.

So, I reinstalled the dead 8800GS. I got video without issue; I just played with some BIOS settings and shut it down so it didn't overheat given the fan is toast. I then removed it, tested the 260X some more, and gave up. I'm once again running using the onboard video without issue.

What are the chances the 260X is just DOA? Can you think of anything else I should try before I RMA it, other than trying it in another PC? What are the chances an outdated motherboard BIOS is the issue?

Thanks again.

I'd say you need to RMA the 260X.

The plot thickens.

Prior to RMAing the 260x, I wanted to try running it in another system. So I did, and it worked!

I then wanted to make sure it wasn't something else in the initial system that was the issue, so I swapped in the HD6950 from the second system, and the initial system worked without issue!

So what is it about the initial system that might be incompatible with the 260x? All the components in the second system are actually older.

The only thing I can't get to work with the 260x on the second system is dual monitors. An ASUS VH236H is detected fine by both the 260X's DVI-D and DVI-I port. However, a much older Viewsonic VX2025wm (DVI-D cable) won't show up on either.

Could the 260x actually have compatibility issues with the Viewsonic, and the LG W2343T-PF that wasn't detected by the card when installed in the initial system?

Thanks again.

You might not have installed the 260X properly or connected it to the monitor properly.
