It is not really worth upgrading the CPU.

Fist off, there may be an issue just replacing the processor because it is more than likely soldered onto the motherboard. Secondly, do you know the motherboard information...as in what socket it is? And what model it is? Third, I just don't see you getting the performance you think you would even if you could upgrade...and the costs associated with upgrading is just not worth it.

You should just start again from the beginning, the parts in that pc are too old.

Exactly why I said it was not worth upgrading or trying to upgrade. Even if you were to just switch out the motherboard, you would also have to switch out the CPU...and the RAM (if you went with a decent motherboard because your RAM is currently DDR2 and newer motherboards would use DDR3 or the newest ones use DDR4). The SATA II hard drive is not horrible...because there are still SATA II hard drives being sold and plenty of people buy them. However I would definitely recommend going for a SATA III hard drive instead. And one that has a lot more capacity.

The PSU would have to be replaced also, and the operating system to make use of a decent amount of RAM...and by changing out the motherboard you would have to buy a new OS anyway. So the costs of upgrading are just like building a new PC. However you can save a lot of time and money by just building a new PC or buying another cheap pre-built one (if you only need it for watching Netflix and word processor) rather than dedicating so much towards building a crazy Franken-Rig.

Just saying that I agreed with what you were saying and added to it. Why?

Oh, no. But I did definitely appreciate the comment about it being old and not worth it. Always good to have other chime in, in agreement on a topic like this. It makes it easier to convince the OPs, rather than relying solely on a single persons point of view on the subject.

There is no difference between Home Premimum and Ultimate in terms of performance. Don't steal more than you need!

You should really just save up and build a new rig. You are trying to revive a dinosaur.

@Ramon,

Open that damn desktop, and find out mother board model - ther is a good chance it is from some OEM and not custom eMachines motherboard. Then, Google documentation for that motherboard and see what processors it supports. You should also check whether you have to attach a fan to the CPU if there is none, and whether you have physical space to do that.

But - as other said, the $50 you will spend for new CPU and FAN are better saved for new computer.
