FX 8150 Overheating?

I've done a number of searches without a solid answer so I decided to ask.

Current rig is
Fx 8150(stock) on a 2 year old noname liquid cooler
Asrock 970Extreme4 Mobo (new)
Radeon 7950
8gigs of ram
running Win 7 ultimate
850watt corsair PSU

When playing Either PS2 or Dota2 I will get normal FPS for a time, then the game will drop to sub 20 fps for a few seconds. Happens regardless of graphical settings.

CPU idles around 35C and under load peaks at 62C

When watching my Resource monitor the only thing I can see is When I get a fps drop I see my CPU frequency drop from 100% to around 50%.

I read another thread where 2 windows hot fixes were linked, I tried both with no results. Do I just need a new cooler ?

Solution

If it's set to 1.255 manually and it's showing 1.3 in some software like hwmonitor then it means that Turbo Core is enabled, disable it!

62C is socket temp or core temp? If that's socket temp then it's fine.

The FPS is dropping because of power saving features. Turn off "Cool & Quiet", Core C6, and other C states from BIOS (Advance->CPU Configuration tab). Then you will not see frequency drops, your frequency will always be maximum.

If you don't want to turn off cool & quiet then go to "Power options" in windows, and there go to advance settings->Minimal processor state, change it to 50-60%, it will be 5% by default.

When I play games like BF3 I turn off cool & quiet and I get 100-130 FPS. Otherwise it keeps fluctuating between 30-120.

I open my motherboard utility program and it says cpu temp. And motherboard temp. That's all it says.
I will test your suggestions tomorrow morning, thanks for the quick answer!

The motherboard utility shows socket temp. So don't worry you are safe with 62C socket temp under load. For AMD FX chips the maximum socket temp should not go above 72C.

You can install HWMonitor software and report your core temp and socket temp under load.

So I just tried what you said with only slight improvement. I got better fps for longer, but socket temp reaches 68c and I was still getting 10 or so FPS at times.

Edited to Add Idle temps are now high... around 55c

Also reporting Lower fan RPM

That's safe temp but that's something you should not get if you are not using stock cooler. I would strongly suggest cleaning your rig and reinstalling the cooler by reapplying thermal paste well. Try the pea method.

Make sure Cool & Quiet, C1E, C6 Core state are enabled for BIOS.

Also make sure that control panel->power options->advance settings->minimal processor state is 5%.

That's a nice temp under load. Anything under 60C is safe. You're very safe. Glad to help!
