I dropped a WD ext. Hard Drive. Right after, it stopped working and a clicking started. COMPUTER WILL NOT recognized drive. I plugged it into a different usb port and tried using a different wire. NO LUCK.Heads move from inside of disk to outside of disk about 4 times then stops. If you can help, [email address removed by moderator]

("Heads move" sounds like the disk has been removed from the external case and - gulp - opened?)

When I run across dropped external HDDs that no longer work, it's something in the case - not the drive - that doesn't work. Some small board is cracked, some soldered cable is loose, some connector broken off. But the hard-drive is fine.

I remove those drives, hook them up with some USB-to-IDE/SATA connector kit, and attach them to the computer for external operations. Bare, yes. But they work. External cases can be cheap with plentiful choices.
