EVGA GTX 760 2GB Dual Display Trouble (HDMI & VGA to DVI-D)

Alright, so I have two 32" display screens, one has an HDMI port only and the other has both HDMI and VGA ports. I have one connected via HDMI and the other via VGA to DVI-D, but when I load up my PC, only the HDMI display works and the VGA to DVI-D isn't even detected.

I've tried using the nVida control panel with no luck as well as Windows+P to force it to display anything that may be connected to my GTX 760.

I've also tested out my VGA cable to see if that was the problem by removing the DVI-D adapter and connecting it to a different PC (one with no GPU) with no luck until I switched it to a third display (borrowed it for troubleshooting) and then it did work.

On the display that it did work I then disconnected it from the different PC, added the adapter back and connected it to my PC with no luck again (I've tried restarting it while they were plugged in and whatnot as well).

Could someone please tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong, I'm new to having multiple displays so I may be doing something wrong and I have no idea.

Solution
I'd grab another hdmi cable and see if that fixes the problem. If your video card only has 1 hdmi then I'd get and hdmi to dvi or something like that. VGA is kind of a waste when you have a good gpu.

I don't have any problem with my HDMI connection however and I've actually already ordered an HDMI to DVI-D cable as well.
I hope that when it arrives, it'll be the solution.

I'm assuming you've tried this but perhaps you have not. Right click and select screen resolution and see if your second display is detected. If so, it may be black; click on that and extend to this display and click apply. Hopefully that works too but I'm guessing you've already tried this to no avail. If not, even if this works you should still change the cables when they arrive. Please keep us up to date with how it goes!

You're correct, I have already tried that, I've been at this for about two hours now, I finally decided to try to get some help, that's why I posted this thread.

Also, some drivers need the most up to date bios to work. I'm guessing you did that too already but perhaps not? Sometimes it's just that 1 thing we don't remember to do. I'd rather bore or irritate you a few times rather than assume you did everything and possibly get it all working sooner than later by eliminating variables.

Actually this I haven't given a try, how do I go about making sure my BIOS drivers or drivers are up to date?
Oh and I do very much appreciate your trying to help me!

hit winkey+r type dxdiag and hit enter. Check your bios version.
Next, look up via your mobo manufacturer and model and input os system version and it will list latest bios for download. if yours is behind in number you do not have the latest bios. warning. download your current bios version as well and keep it on a thumb drive. Sometimes the newer bios can cause more problems (rare but possible) and best to be safe and be able to revert to current bios if needed. Glad I could help.

Ok well I did the first part no problem but when I go to my motherboards website and look up the model number (MSI Z97 PC Mate) there is no option for OS (Win7 64 bit), is that a problem?

http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97_PC_Mate.html#down-bios is this where I need to go in my case?

Yes, watch videos, google, do your homework so you know the easiest way for you to update; flash bios is what I do and I believe your board can do it. Either way download 4.4; you are many revisions old if the numbers are any indicators.

Something just clicked haha, I was reading my BIOS as 4.6 when its not, it'd be 4.06 and the latest is 4.4, well thanks man will do. I've never done this before so I guess I'll try the flash option you mentioned, I've no clue how to back up my BIOS either or if I even should considering how outdated it is.

Well I updated my BIOS and I was really hoping this would be the issue but nope, guess I'll just have to wait for that HDMI to DVI-D cable to get here in a day or two.

At least know I now about updating my BIOS and how to do it! The cable should be getting here today, I'll be well gutted if it still doesn't work though. Thank you for all of your help though!

Forgive me if this has been stated already, but is the adapter you're using an active one or passive one?

DVI-D doesn't carry an analog signal, it only has a digital one. DVI-I is the one that has both the digital and analog signal, so traditionally you use a DVI-I to VGA adapter for this kind of thing. A DVI-D to VGA adapter needs to be of the active variety (and subsequently more expensive), as it needs to convert between digital and analog signals. If you only have a passive adapter then that's almost certainly the reason it's not working for you.

Your replacement HDMI to DVI-D cable should certainly work though (digital signal to digital signal), and if it doesn't, then you have another issue at hand.

I didn't even know that was a thing and I'm most certain I must have the wrong one then. Hopefully the HDMI to DVI-D works! I love how I keep learning more and more.
