2 months ago I built a new pc for the first time ever, only to find out that AC4 & Far Cry 3 kept freezing after just a few minutes of playing. W7 compatibility mode & running as administator fixed AC4 for 10 hours of flawless gameplay, then I tried the same thing for FC3. It didn't work and AC4 started freezing again!

After not bothering with games for most of the summer, I tried again only to find that Rome II: Total War froze as well. After a few days of tinkering and deleting some temporary R2TW files, R2TW & AC4 suddenly started working most of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play AC4 for 2 hours, twice with another attempt ending in a CTD, R2TW CTD-ed after 5 minutes for the first attempt, but played perfectly through 3h of multiplayer afterwards. Far Cry 3 OTOH, did a CTD two times in a row within 10 minutes of playing. Basically, I have no idea why the first two are suddenly working 'well enough', while the third is still running like crap. Also, whenever a game crashes, any attempt to launch it again instantly fails until I reboot.

All my drivers are up-to-date, I played 2 hours of AC4 & 3 hours of R2TW yesterday, so the hardware obviously works well, and they are running in compatibility mode, so I really don't know where the problem lies.

In any case, I don't dare to buy new games as long as the ones I have can't run (nearly) flawlessly.

Idle temp seems to be around 28-35 °C, AC4 just froze on me after 5 minutes with a temp of just 54 °C.

Since I can play for 2-3h at least without any problems at times, and freeze or crash in 5 min at other times, and this with several games, I do think that the problem is somehow software-related.
