my 10 yr old has just got a new lap top other broken when we added steam to his new laptop his games show up to be downloaded but when he opened them up none of his old footage is there. they are back to the start even though it shows how long he has previously played on said games. is this usual? how do I rectify this if it is possible. I am not a gamer so do not know all the lingo

If it wasn't set up for cloud saves in steam for the game then it put the saves most likely in My Documents folder in a folder with the games name.

Did you have the saves backed up from his my documents folder? Some games save progress in steam, most do not. If you cannot access his old computer or it's hard drive, then there is nothing you can do to restore his saves. If you do still have the old hard drive, you can hook it up to his new pc using a hard drive docking station and pull the save folders over to his new pc.
