Hello,

My computer has recently been causing me quite a bit of headache. Whenever I restart it all the programs that are installed on my main (C: ) drive (a Samsung 840 EVO SSD) take a long time to start (i.e. Windows explorer loads for 5 minutes, Steam is stuck on "Checking available updates" for 5-10 minutes). Programs I have installed on my secondary drive (F: ) seem to have no problem at all to start immediately. If I shut the computer down, then start it up again this problem does not occur

Alternatively, I have noticed that games I'm trying to run via Steam take a long time to load (5-10 minutes) once I hit the "Play" button (regardless of whether I start it after a restart or a shutdown)

I have double-checked and updated all my drivers and have TRIM enabled on my SSD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Go to Start>Run>msconfig>Enter. Look under the "Boot" tab and confirm that only your Windows installation is there, and nothing else. Next, go to the "Startup" tab and examine each entry to be sure that the entry is a legitimate program that truly needs to startup when you boot the computer. Google any that you don't recognize. Uncheck any unnecessary programs.

Have you run an A/V scan lately? Is your A/V up to date?

How long has the computer been running in its current configuration?
Have you ever been able to run it in this configuration without problems?
Have you recently added any hardware of software?
How was Windows installed on the SSD? Clean install or clone from HDD?

Hello,

Thank you for your quick response. I have been running this computer in its current configuration since January 2014. It was running with no problems until recently, although a couple of months prior I had trouble with high CPU usage from chrome.exe (and resulting crackling/distortion noise from the speakers). I regularly fixed the problem by performing a restart, as it seemed to do the trick, but I never quite figured out the root of the problem. The problem went away after I freed up some space from my SSD drive (it is currently a little over half full with 100 GB still free).

The last new hardware I added was my secondary hard drive in February. The only new softwares I have added were games via Steam and disks. My Windows was installed cleanly from a disk.

Since posting the question I have noticed a couple of additional unusual things: for some reason I cannot install the Steam client on my secondary hard drive, it only recognizes my main drive. I have also noticed that the problem with games loading with a 10+ minute delay only apply to certain games. Tomb Raider and Metro 2033 Redux are working without a hitch and start instantly, whereas Murdered: Soul Suspect and Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons take the delay.

Thank you for your assistance,

Well, a Windows reinstall seemed to have fixed the above mentioned issues. The only peculiarity I have encountered is that it required me to install it via the disk, I couldn't do a factory reset with just the OS. I guess some important files got lost at one point.

At any rate, happy to report that a clean reinstall of Windows has helped and both my computer and all my Steam games are running properly.

Thank you ever so much for your assistance,
